Safety

Firework Code:

  1. Keep fireworks in a sealed box or tin
  2. Use them one at a time, replacing the lid immediately
  3. NEVER put fireworks in your pocket
  4. Read the instructions carefully, using a torch or hand lamp NEVER use a naked flame
  5. Light fireworks at arms length using a taper or a firework lighter
  6. Stand well back and NEVER return to a firework after it has been lit, it could explode in your face
  7. Ensure that all chidren with fireworks are well supervised
  8. NEVER throw fireworks
  9. Keep all pets and animals indoors
  10. Take care of sparklers, wear gloves to hold them and dispose of sparklers in a bucket of water as soon as they are finished

Sparklers
Sparklers, like other fireworks, must be used with care. They can get six times as hot as a pan of cooking oil. It makes sense to keep sparklers in safe hands.
  • Unsuitable for children under five
  • Light one at a time
  • Hold at arm’s length
  • Wear gloves when holding sparklers
  • Put used sparklers hot end down into a bucket of sand or water
Before the display
  • Ensure your display area is free from hazards
  • Do not tamper with fireworks
  • Read the instructions in daylight
  • Warn neighbours, especially the elderly and those with animals
  • One person – clearly identified – should be responsible for the fireworks
Things you will need on the night

 

  • Torch for checking instructions
  • Bucket of water or fire extinguisher
  • Protective hat, eye protection and gloves
  • First aid kit
  • Bucket or large tray of soft earth or sand to stick fireworks in where required
  • A board for flat bottomed fireworks
  • Suitable supports for Catherine wheels
  • Proper launchers for rockets
During the display

 

  • When outside the firework box should be covered with a tarpaulin or other spark proof sheet as one spark could ignite the whole lot
  • Never smoke while handling, or near, fireworks
  • Light fireworks at arm’s length with a taper or portfire
  • Stand well back
  • Never put fireworks in pockets
  • Never go back to a lit firework
  • Keep children under control
After the display

 

  • Soak non ignited fireworks in water for 24 hours prior to disposal
  • Use gloves to collect spent fireworks
  • Next morning check again and remove any firework debris
